An Examination of UE’s Recent Independent K-12 School Claims

To determine the most frequent, severe sources of liability for independent K-12 schools, United Educators (UE) has reviewed data from all independent schools’ claims reported to us from 2012-16. Total losses approached $93 million.

Use information from our analysis to identify appropriate types and amounts of insurance coverage needed and determine where to focus risk management resources.

• The roughly 1,600 independent school claims filed from 2012-16 resulted in nearly $93 million in total loss to UE and our member schools.
• General liability (GL) policies — which apply to events causing bodily injuries — resulted in 71% of claims reported and 78% of losses.
• Among the most common GL claims were slips and falls, claims related to athletics, and sexual assault.
