Checklist: Evaluating Your Mental Health Policies

Heather Salko, Esq.
April 2021

Why Read This

Mental health issues affect college and university students personally and academically, and demands on related campus services are rising. Use these four checklists to assess the soundness of your institution’s policies and practices for medical leave and return, standards for medical or clinical programs, and postvention plans. The checklists offer guidance on how to:

  • Assess whether elements within your institution’s medical leave and return policy are sound
  • Determine what to incorporate into your institution’s medical leave and return policy regarding involuntary removal of a student for mental health issues
  • Examine standards related to medical or clinical programs
  • Evaluate your suicide postvention plan
