Coaches Abusing Athletes at Colleges and Universities: A Snapshot

January 2026

Why Read This

Physical and emotional abuse by coaches is a common occurrence in athletics — and often goes undisciplined. Bullying, hazing, assault, and other forms of abuse that are not tolerated in the classroom are also unacceptable on the field.

This snapshot reviews lessons derived from United Educators’ (UE’s) higher education coach-on-athlete abuse claims and provides a guide to inform your institution’s review of Athletics department practices.

Key Takeaways

  • Coaches should avoid favoritism and remain consistent with expectations and treatment of athletes. This will help coaches provide a supportive and inclusive environment that keeps athletes healthy and engaged.
  • Train students and athletics employees to recognize and report coach abuse.
  • Prohibit retaliation against athletes for reporting abuse.
