United Educators Honors Pat McGuire With Bachich Award

Bethesda, Md., April 18, 2023 — United Educators (UE), a reciprocal risk retention group that provides risk management and insurance to K-12 schools, colleges, and universities, honored Trinity Washington University President Pat McGuire in recognition of her significant impact on higher education and the success of UE.

A former UE board member, McGuire received the Frank J. Bachich Award in recognition of her loyalty, commitment, dedication, inquisitiveness, and hard work — in 2020. Disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic delayed her being honored in person by UE until 2023.

She is the only person to receive a Bachich Award, named in honor of a former UE board member, since 2018.

“Pat brought an invaluable perspective as someone who has devoted her life to serving the wider community, particularly underserved students, including in her role as President of Trinity,” said Janice Abraham, UE President and CEO. “She truly deserves this recognition for her leadership supporting education’s important mission and for her steadfast focus on UE’s service to education.”

Elected to the UE’s Subscribers’ Advisory Board in 2008, McGuire served for 12 years. She was a member of UE’s Executive Committee and served for four years as chair of the Governance Committee.

“What a tremendous honor I had in serving on UE’s Board for 12 years,” McGuire said. “UE provides excellent and critical support for K-12 schools, colleges, and universities as they improve risk management practices and face new and difficult risk challenges. The team at UE is creative and totally dedicated to ensuring the best possible risk protection for their clients.”

Before becoming Trinity’s President in 1989, McGuire was Assistant Dean for Development and External Affairs for Georgetown University Law Center, where she also was an adjunct professor of law.

McGuire received a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and a law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. She is a member of the board of directors of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the Washington Metropolitan Consortium of Universities, the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, and the Ameritas Mutual Holding Company.

In 2014, then-Secretary of Education Arne Duncan appointed McGuire to the Department of Education’s Advisory Committee on Student Financial Aid. She served in that position in 2014-15. In 2000, McGuire was appointed to a special term on the Education Advisory Committee overseeing D.C. Public Schools.
