Checklist: Investigating Accidents Causing Personal Injury

Melanie Bennett, Esq., ARM-E
November 2022

Why Use This

Good investigation practices after an accident can significantly reduce the chance of litigation or strengthen an institution’s defense when litigation results. United Educators (UE) designed this checklist for use by K-12 school, college, and university employees who investigate any type of accident that occurs on campus or school grounds and results in personal injury. Among the possible investigators: Environmental health and safety team members, security officers, human resources employees, and risk managers.

This checklist includes:

  • Investigator Selection and Training
  • Investigation Preparation
  • Investigating the Accident Scene and Circumstances
  • Interviewing Parties and Witnesses
