Early reporting and active involvement by the institution and UE aressential for successful claims resolution. An institution that fails to meet the reporting responsibilities outlined in its insurance policy risks denial of coverage or loss of full benefits. Reporting considerations vary with the type of policy.
UE offers licensed professional liability and experiential student policies for situations in which students are developing their skills or advancing their education through hands-on experience. Whether or not they have a license, the LPL policy is also applicable when faculty supervise the activities of licensed professionals, or when the institution's employees provide professional services.
UE’s LPL coverage addresses situations frequently excluded from other policies and provides peace of mind for managing the risks of programs or services which involve professional licensing. This protection complements UE’s general liability (GL) and educators legal liability (ELL) coverage, helping your institution reduce the total cost of risk.
LPL coverage is designed for internship activities requiring professional licensing and covers:
UE’s LPL policy covers most professional services and professional internship programs without the need for a schedule. Program examples include nursing, architecture, law, psychology, accounting, most engineering programs, and many more. This comprehensive coverage eliminates the worry of inadvertently failing to schedule all professional activities or forgetting to schedule a newly-introduced service or internship program.
Some claims may trigger coverage under multiple liability policies, so UE can coordinate the LPL and our GL and ELL policies to provide seamless claims handling. The LPL is treated as an underlying policy for both the GLX or GLU and the ELL policy.
UE can provide up to $1 million per claim with an aggregate of up to $3 million.
ESP applies to many state institutions in which the state’s immunities do not extend to students.
We can provide up to $1 million per claim with an aggregate of up to $3 million.
Most institutions of higher education offer internships or cooperative education options, providing students with structured work experience in real-life settings. However, cooperating employers are increasingly requiring certificates of insurance for students participating in internships with the employer.
UE developed the experiential student policy (ESP) as a solution for these educational institutions. This policy will protect students against liability claims and will facilitate employers' willingness to provide internships, cooperative education programs, field studies, work-study programs, or other learning experiences.
The ESP policy is written with no deductible or retention. It can cover students in almost any program that provides academic credit for internships and in experiential programs from acting to zoology.
